Saturday started off with a trip to the Dallas Farmers Market which is fun to do, but unless you happen to live in the area, the prices aren't really worth the extra expense of driving there. Now we were going to be in the area anyways so we brought our ice chest and went to town.It can be tricky navigating the tiny aisles crammed with people and you have to be strong enough to not get sucked into the hard sell. Everyone is shoving free samples in your face and it is probably a great way to get a light lunch in for the day. In my experience, from stall to stall things don't really look or taste that different but listening to people, it's like they know some big secret about who has the freshest melon or berry or tomato. Everything is usually pretty well marked with prices but you have to be careful to not let your eyes fool you. The vendors place items in baskets and they look like they are just overflowing with fresh items and then when you buy one you realize they have stuff packed in the bottom of the basket so you end up with about 1/3 less than you might have expected. All in all, you cant beat it for freshness but unless you are within walking distance, your local grocer is probably the best bet.
After the Farmers Market, Richard and I went to Deep Ellum for the 2011 Deep Ellum Arts Festival. Let me just say that Deep Ellum did a much better job at putting together an Arts Fest than the Dallas Arboretum. Of course, Deep Ellum is an Arts District so they were just better prepared to put on an amazing show. They had 120 artists, 90 bands, street performers and even a pet parade! The beer was cold and the food amazing, if you haven't had candied bacon before, I suggest you drop everything and try it immediately.
We met the Mardi Gras crew yet again, because, well who really even needs a reason to hang with good friends? We all roamed around looking at all the different artists and trying all the different foods and maybe just one or two beers. (Once again, it is my blog, so I have creative license.) We came across this building that was bright red and had all the windows covered by heavy curtains. It had velvet ropes and a red carpet out front and a small handwritten sign on the wall that simply stated "Come In". We were hooked in an instant and made our way across the street to see what this was about.
We entered the building and were greeted by darkness, music and people in amazing outfits. There was art displayed all around, The Wizard of Oz was playing on a wall, a big white cloth screen had a hypnotizing belly dancer behind it, back lit with rotating color schemes. We had just stumbled down the rabbit hole and landed in The Quixotic World. I struggle with words to describe it but maybe if Alice in Wonderland and Pink Floyd's The Wall had a baby and that baby took a bunch of LSD. Now I do not condone giving babies hallucinogens, I am merely trying to paint a picture of what can really only be experienced in person. As we got further towards the back of the building, they had another video being projected on the wall. To our amazement they were playing what I now know is Fritz the Cat. Think crazy animated cat porn with a social message. Don't watch it with the kids, but I would say it was worth adding to your Netflix queue. Just about the time our brains were able to process all that was going on around us, a man was getting a little too excited by the movie and we all felt the need for a Silkwood shower and headed out the door.It started getting later in the day and we were out of tickets for food and beer, so we all bid each other farewell and headed our separate ways. It was a great Saturday of fun and got some great sun too. Gotta love the Texas weather.
P.S. Yes that is me taking a pic of myself in the Porta-Potty. C'mon you gotta know I'm crazy like that. Love to you all!! Until next time.
