A virgin bridge and a gay bull? Believe it, or not.

Hey everyone, it is time once again for a trip down our memory lane. We have had a few busy weekends but we got to do some fun stuff and we got a super brief visit from one of our OKC peeps. Much love to ya Carlye!!

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge
Dallas got a pretty sweet looking bridge built recently, and as part of the big celebration they had, the Trinity River Levee Run was rerouted to allow the runners to run across the bridge. It was pretty exciting to run across and to know that (at least for now) we were told that nobody else would be allowed to run across it. It feels nice to be a part of a little history. The other exciting part about this run is that this was our first 10k (6.2 miles). We had done plenty of 5k runs so this was a nice jump up for us. We had done a 10k a few days before the race on our normal run thru the neighborhood to get a feel for timing and how we would feel afterwards. Our "test run" time was 1 hour and 17 minutes and our official race time was 1 hour and 3 minutes so we felt GREAT about that time. Running has become such a great part of our lives and it is a great way to socialize as well. Most of our new friends are runners, by luck, not design, so it is great to get to see everyone at these events and hang out at the wonderful beer gardens that are usually present post race. Up next on the racing scene will be the Dash Down Greenville. A nice St. Patrick's Day run with what I understand to be just a little alcohol involved. Can't wait! It seems impossible, but April 1st is the AIDS walk/run and that will mark 1 year of what I like to call "professional running".

Next up on our fantastic voyage was the 2012 TGRA Gay Rodeo. I grew up going to rodeos and my mom and I used to go to Bullnanza as often as it came to town, but this was a new experience. Imagine the rodeo you are probably used to seeing and then add a ton of fun. This rodeo has all the classics, bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping, etc. and on top of that has fun events like goat dressing and wild drag race.  Goat dressing involved teams racing against each other to put underwear on a goat, what could be funnier than a goat wearing Grandpa briefs? There were vendors and hot dogs and of course, BEER. Nothing goes better with the smell of sawdust and manure better than beer.  You can see a slideshow below of quite a lot of the goings on. Obviously iPhones are not great at capturing action shots but I included most of them because you know what is going on even if it isn't a perfectly crisp photo. If I were you, I would check my local listings and see when your local event is and I would make the time to go. We had a blast and a full day out of it. We can't wait until next time.

Last on our list was a quick visit from our friend Carlye from OKC. She was in town with her mom and her 2 kids and we met up for some fun and dinner. We went to Ripley's Believe it or Not and Louis Tussaud's Waxworks. I remember going to Ripley's when I was a kid with my Dad, and I drive past it several times a week but never really thought about going again so this was the perfect excuse. We arrived a little late in the day so we didn't have as much time as you may like to spend, but we definitely got to see it all. We started on the Ripley's side where you can see things like the human hair sweater vest and the Canadian Furry Bass. They also had some exciting fun house type scenes to walk thru with earthquakes and tornadoes. Art made from fingernails, popcorn and even pennies and the classic Last Supper made from postage stamps. Seeing the world's tallest man and the longest neck, even a little half fish half human hybrid, I'm pretty sure it was Ariel but since we had 2 small children with us, I decided not to mention that. After we finished Ripley's, we entered Louis Tussaud's Wax Works. Apparently Louis was the great-grandson of Madame Tussaud but had a family falling out, so he went out on his own. I will say I have been to Madame Tussaud's in Las Vegas and now seeing Louis' version, there is no comparison. While most of the Louis Tussaud figures were definitely recognizable, the quality is no where near as good. You can see lots of the figures in the slide show below. It was still lots of fun to see them and sneak a few pics of us all with the celebs. You aren't supposed to enter the scenes, but how could you not. I included all the interactive shots at the beginning of the slide show for your enjoyment. There were tons of (mostly) relevant celebrities, a hall of Presidents, a Biblical section, Fairy Tales, and my personal favorite, the HORROR section. I must admit that I jumped like a little girl a couple of times in the horror section. We did not do the mirror maze or the laser tag but those activities are available as well. The whole thing was more entertaining than I remember it being as a child, however I don't think it is something you could do over and over and still enjoy. We followed that up with a wonderful dinner at Applebee's, how can that ever be a bad thing.

Thanks again for reading as always, and be sure to watch for the first entry in the Eating Thru the Alphabet challenge over on my food blog. Until next time, get out there and find your verb!!!

  1. LOL...I liked the 184ft chain whittled out of a piece of 18ft X 22in X 1in board. Someone had a lot of free time on their hands. (Believe it or not!)
